The weather is just perfect now. It’s become the kind of weather spring loves. I’ve always preferred spring or autumn, but between the two, spring is better. Generally, autumn weather is truly lovely and the sky is high and beautiful, but spring is better in that there are no bugs. I dislike autumn because there are too many mosquitoes and mayflies. So, I prefer spring over autumn. As the weather improves, my spirits feel much lighter.
Before it got too hot, I used to exercise during lunchtime, but now that it’s warmer, I’ve switched to evening. Dad and I have started running little by little. I used to be a good runner. I was good at running since I was young, and I also liked and was good at soccer, but since my body isn’t what it used to be, I wondered if I could still do well. So, at first, I walked little by little. Since last time, I’ve been practicing fast walking, like race walking. And now, I can run a little.
When running, I wore sneakers. I lifted my left and right legs alternately, taking steps. That’s how I started running. Dad, perhaps worried about me, followed right beside me. Initially, I ran three kilometers. It wasn’t perfect yet. Sometimes, when running, my body would lean slightly to the left, and other times it would sway to the right. I consciously tried to check my balance and stay centered as I ran.
Still, I was surprised myself at how much better I was than before. The thought, “Wow, the day has come when I can run like this again!” filled me with such gratitude. It felt so good. I was so happy. Today was three kilometers, but it felt like I could gradually increase the distance now. By consistently running little by little, rather than trying to run long distances at once, I somehow managed to run 10 kilometers.
“Wow, I’m just like my old self again!” I exclaimed to myself. In the past, it used to take me about 50 minutes to run 10 kilometers, but I don’t think I can do that now. I still need to prepare a lot. There was some regret that it took me 60 minutes to run 10 kilometers, but the fact that I could run at all felt incredibly good. “Yes, I used to do 50 minutes, so I can do well. I can’t do it right away, but with a little time, I’ll be able to cut it down to 50 minutes.” I made this positive resolve. And when I got better at running, I thought about getting back into swimming.
I had planned to do a triathlon for my children. It was a plan I prepared to be a good, strong father to my son. I had practiced swimming a lot, but after my stroke, when I couldn’t exercise to do many things, that plan fizzled out. Ah… I want to start again. I’ve got a good bike ready, and I just need to consistently practice running. I also thought about preparing for swimming again when I’m ready. The desire to challenge myself with a triathlon again grew stronger as my body improved. Even though everything isn’t perfect now, and I haven’t fully regained my old self, the very fact that I can run again is a huge miracle and hope for me. I will continue to work hard, using this hope as my stepping stone.
