A Confession in Recovery – “Christmas, the Gift of a Miracle of Life”

It was a very cold day, with Christmas just around the corner. I’m usually sensitive to the cold, but that day I felt particularly unwell. It was the day I had promised to eat and play games with my children, and they were surprised. I was speaking strangely, unlike my usual self, and soon I couldn’t even speak at all. I kept telling my children, “Tell Mom about this.” After saying that, I lost consciousness.

My sons truly saved me. My young sons informed my wife and grandmother that I was acting strangely, and thanks to them, emergency measures were taken. My sons saved my life. Although there was a large hospital close to our house, I couldn’t go there. My sister-in-law’s father-in-law tried to move me to another nearby hospital, and I was so grateful for his help. At that moment, my mom contacted an acquaintance, which allowed me to go to Samsung Medical Center. I sincerely thank everyone who worked tirelessly for me at the hospital late into the night and early morning. In that moment, I could have died, but so many people helped me. I can never forget the kindness of so many people whose names I don’t even know.

And something I learned later was that one of only two special ambulances in Korea at the time transported me. I can imagine how worried my family must have been while waiting for that special ambulance. When I arrived at the hospital and said my last goodbyes before going into surgery, my wife, mom, dad, and sister were there. Of course, I couldn’t speak then. I was practically dying. My dad reportedly offered a final prayer for me in front of the doctors.

Recently, on the way home, I suddenly had a thought. I got out of the car and was about to take the elevator when I met my neighbor. They saw me and suddenly burst into tears, saying, “I’m so relieved.” In their tears, I could feel their worry and relief for me. The love and prayers of many people saved me. All these moments make me even more humble and grateful.
