I was injured by a stroke. Without even knowing how it happened, I miraculously survived after hovering on the brink of death in the hospital. At Samsung Seoul Hospital, one of the most renowned hospitals in Korea, I went to the threshold of death and came back to life. I sincerely thank the doctors there and the many nurses and therapists who cared for me day and night. Thanks to their dedication and effort, I am alive and writing today. They said I had over 30 areas of brain damage after the stroke, so I can’t even fathom how serious my condition was. Especially due to the damage to the Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas, I am experiencing significant difficulty in speaking and understanding.
I am still receiving treatment at Samsung Hospital. Although I’ve been discharged from inpatient care, regular check-ups and outpatient treatments are essential. It’s true that it costs a lot of money and is financially difficult. My income has stopped, and my family is making great efforts to cover my treatment costs. But I am enduring all these difficulties with one single desire: the earnest hope to “live like a human being.”
A stroke is a terrifying illness that goes beyond mere physical paralysis; it threatens a person’s dignity. My inability to speak properly, my blurry memory, and my diminished cognitive abilities have made it difficult for me to function as a member of society. However, I will not give up. I am learning many things through this painful experience: the preciousness of life, the love of family, and gratitude for small things.
Through this writing, I want to send a message to fellow stroke survivors like myself. We are not alone. There are companions to walk with us on this long and arduous journey of recovery. When you feel despair, when you want to give up, look around you. There is family, medical staff, and people like me who are going through the same pain. We can be a source of comfort and hope for each other.
Recovery takes a long time. Sometimes it may feel slow, or even like you’re regressing. But if you don’t give up and persevere, you can definitely get better. I am still not perfect. I continue my difficult battle, receiving speech therapy and physical therapy every day. Sometimes tears stream down from frustration, and there are times when I want to just give up everything. However, I get back up again. For my beloved family, and for my earnest desire to ‘live like a human being.’
Whatever difficulties you may be facing right now, remember this: Please wait. You are not alone. We can overcome this ordeal together. I sincerely hope this writing offers you a small bit of courage and comfort.
