Chapter 19: A Confession in Recovery – “Two Gifts for Recovery: Money and a Warm Heart”

I’ve finally returned home and slowly started studying. I’m trying to prepare for and follow the various learning programs the hospital recommended. The frustration of not being able to speak properly still lingers. I often wonder when I’ll be able to speak freely again, like before. At first, I thought it would get better naturally with time, just like when I injured my leg. I believed that just as time heals a broken bone, it would heal my brain too.

However, I gradually realized that this was completely different from a typical recovery. It wasn’t something that would simply get better with the passage of time. I learned that my injured brain needed just as much effort and time as it takes to become fluent in English after studying for several years. Having personally experienced how difficult and how much patience is required for many people to work towards recovery with an injured body, I now understand. Everything feels difficult and arduous.

Yet, if I had to pick the two most important things amidst all these difficulties, the first would be money. Recovery takes time, and the money to afford that time is absolutely essential. I need to consistently study and receive treatment for my brain to gradually improve, and all these processes require money. My family will have to spend a lot of money on me for a long time. If someone has the money to study and get treatment on their own, they are truly lucky.

At Samsung Medical Center, I saw many people who were injured similarly to me. Many couldn’t continue their treatment or studies due to a lack of funds because they couldn’t work. Recovery requires a long time, and it needs to be supported by the financial means to provide continuous support during that period. Injured individuals have to rely on their families financially; they need money for daily meals and for nutritious foods like meat. Even wanting to communicate similarly to others can sometimes cost money. When I think about all these expenses, the sheer amount weighs heavily on my heart. Despite all this, I’m incredibly grateful that there are people who can help me. Many people tend to underestimate or easily dismiss the importance of money. They say that various things like willpower and mindset are needed to get better, but what’s truly important is money. For someone who is injured and unable to do anything, money is an enormous emotional burden and a necessary resource.

The second most important thing is a warm heart. I want to talk about this in more detail, one by one, later. I want to share everything I’ve experienced to help others who are injured like me.
