These days, I primarily do two things at home: spend time with my family and clean. This is quite a different situation compared to before. In the past, my wife did much more of the cleaning. I actually prefer a tidy space, but being busy with work, I couldn’t dedicate much time to cleaning. Still, I tried my best to clean on weekends, and my wife took care of most of it during the weekdays. While I enjoy cleaning, it wasn’t easy on busy weekends when I also had to play with the kids and tidy up various parts of the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, my wife is having a tough time lately. She’s studying more as she attends graduate school, which means she hardly has any time for cleaning. My wife also likes to clean, but she simply doesn’t have the luxury of time these days. Starting graduate school again probably isn’t easy. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for her to resume studying at 35, compared to when she was 23. The period when one can study is truly a good and precious time, but it’s still hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the mornings, after the children and my wife head off to school, I start cleaning. After cleaning, I sit down for a moment to drink coffee, and then Dad comes home. Then we study together. I see this time as another form of rehabilitation for me, and a small way to give back to my family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After my injury, I feel every day how limited my abilities are. I can’t earn money like I used to, or actively engage in social life. So, I had to find things I could do at home. Cleaning was one of them. At first, it was clumsy and difficult, but now I’m doing the cleaning in my own way. Seeing a tidy house makes me feel refreshed, and most importantly, I feel proud knowing I can alleviate some of my wife’s burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In these small, daily routines, I am finding new meaning in life. Even if I can’t do grand things, I want to help my family through the small tasks I can<\/em> do. As my wife goes through a difficult period, I want to play a larger role at home, even if it’s just a little. I believe this is my way of repaying my family and a part of my own recovery process.
