Chapter 52: A Confession in Recovery – Jjajangmyeon

I sometimes eat jjajangmyeon and sometimes jjamppong. Still, I always contemplate, ‘Should I eat jjajangmyeon or jjamppong?’, and in the end, I usually choose jjajangmyeon. It would be great if they would give me a little jjamppong broth with my jjajangmyeon, but they usually don’t. While they might give it if I asked, it feels awkward, so I’ve always just let it go.

In any case, I prefer jjajangmyeon. That day, I went with my dad to eat it. I’ve been eating with my dad often these days, and that’s when I learned that my dad likes jjajangmyeon the most. That’s right. I had never once thought about what my dad likes. Since I was the eldest, I thought I knew everything my dad liked and disliked since I was a child. But my younger sibling likes meat, so what my younger sibling and I liked were different.

And I often talked with my wife about what she likes, where she wants to eat, saying things like, “Let’s go to this neighborhood and eat something delicious.” My heart felt a certain way. I tried to buy delicious things for my wife and children and take them to nice places, but I had never done anything for my dad, and I felt uncomfortable thinking I had always just been on the receiving end. I hadn’t even thought about what my dad liked. I think I just ate what I thought was good.

That day, we were on our way back from the hospital after my therapy. My dad first suggested, “Let’s eat some jjajangmyeon today.” I said I liked jjajangmyeon, too, and was thinking, ‘What jjajangmyeon restaurant would be good in this neighborhood…’ when my dad already knew a delicious place nearby. It wasn’t a place I frequented, but it was truly delicious when I tried it. And it only cost 8,000 won, which I thought was really cheap.

At that moment, I was so upset that I had never once been curious about what my dad liked. I was disappointed in myself. So I thought once more about what my mom and dad like. It seems I didn’t truly know what not only my parents but also my in-laws liked.

I felt so sorry for my parents. The fact that I hadn’t thought about that felt so uncomfortable. I hope to become a better person. Yes, I want to do better. So I hope my mom and dad live long and stay healthy.
