My life has truly changed so much. I used to meet friends every day, chat over coffee with people, and enjoy drinks in the evening. Work was almost my life, and eating, drinking, and having coffee with my colleagues was more common than meeting friends. I lived a bustling life surrounded by people, but after my injury, just meeting anyone became difficult. I struggled to have a proper conversation. I couldn’t express what I wanted to say, so a conversation was impossible. How could I speak when words wouldn’t come out? My heart was filled with frustration, but as I became unable to continue conversations, I felt my relationships gradually fading away.
Despite this, I really wanted to meet my older brother, Andy. He was not only a good person, but he also had his own struggles. Although his pain was of a different kind, he didn’t talk about his difficult story in detail. Nevertheless, I could feel his heart. That’s why I once went all the way to Sindorim to meet him. It was the first time I had ever been there. After meeting him and returning home, I would go back to my monotonous routine of the hospital, the prayer retreat, and church. I didn’t do anything else special.
But for the first time in a long time, I did something different. It was in Daejeon. It was the day my wife was giving an academic presentation. I felt so bad, thinking how great it would have been if I could have driven her there myself. But back then, I couldn’t even properly comprehend what I was thinking, what the problem was, or what was happening. I couldn’t even think, ‘I need to do something,’ or ‘How can I help?’ Even when I heard my wife was taking the bus to Daejeon, I had no grasp of the seriousness of the situation or my wife’s difficulties. I was just unable to think anything at all. Looking back at that time now, I can finally realize and talk about how much Yeil and Hyeonjeong helped out.
In Daejeon, we ate delicious bread and drank coffee. And we also had a really delicious meal, though I can’t remember the name of the food. I’m glad that I can now think about and enjoy delicious things. The old me couldn’t even properly comprehend what I was feeling, what I was thinking, what the problem was, or what was happening, no matter what I ate or saw. I’m still very uncomfortable, and while my ability to move my body has improved somewhat, my mind is at the level of a small child, or perhaps even younger.
I think the same thoughts twice. I become like a child and then I become an adult again. And when thoughts of death cross my mind, my thinking reverts to being childlike again. Just as elderly people’s thoughts change to be childlike as they age, I experience this change twice. I become a child, then an adult, then a child again, and now, as an adult once more, I am studying. Even now, people around me see me as an adult, but in reality, my thoughts are childlike. I’m still very lacking. This reality makes me so upset. Others may say I’m okay, but inside me, the battle is still ongoing.
