Chapter 45: A Confession in Recovery – The Halted Moving Plan

For two or three years, we had planned to change our home’s location. We really liked our current house. The children’s school location was good, and their relationships with their good friends continued to be strong. One of the biggest reasons my wife moved to this neighborhood was also due to her elementary school assignment. When my wife was assigned as an elementary school teacher, we made a long-term plan. Elementary school teachers typically have to change workplaces approximately every five years. So, considering the children’s school location, we planned to live somewhere close for a short period after five years, and then move again when the children were in 3rd to 5th grade of elementary school.

Everything was well-prepared. Things were progressing steadily according to plan, and we were filled with anticipation for the future. But suddenly, everything changed. I got injured, and I held the key to critical matters, especially regarding our home loan. With my injury, I became unable to do anything. I truly couldn’t understand it myself. An overwhelming sense of helplessness washed over me, thinking, ‘Wow… what am I supposed to do with this?’

First, my mind went completely blank. My memory, judgment, and even basic communication abilities had vanished. My wife wanted to move, but with me in this state, she had no idea how to proceed. So, my wife continued to worry alone and tried hard to find a solution. Still, she would often talk to me and explain the situation.

“Honey. Is this how you do it?” “Honey, this is how you handle the bank, and the money, and the loan, right?” My wife continuously asked me questions and explained things. But I couldn’t properly understand her words. Only meaningless phrases like “Uh-huh, good, uh-huh, good…” repeated from my mouth. I didn’t even know what my wife was saying or what I was agreeing to. Since I couldn’t have a proper conversation with my wife, accurately grasping the situation and finding solutions was impossible. It felt as if my wife’s frustration and despair were completely conveyed to me.

For my entire life, my job had been creating and managing loans. I had worked with loans since I was young, built people’s credit, and even went to India to establish a bank. I truly loved this work. I achieved so much doing this job, and I thought I would now live happily with my family and enjoy my work. I believed the golden age of my life was about to begin.

Then, at that very moment when everything was going smoothly, my mind stopped. In an instant, everything crumbled. I, who was best at and most confident in this field, became an incompetent being unable to do anything. Not only the plan to move houses, but all my life’s plans were shaken to their core. Feelings of regret and guilt washed over me at the fact that my wife had to bear all this burden alone. My sadness reached its peak at the thought that I, as the head of the family, couldn’t protect them and instead became a burden.

It’s even more agonizing because I know all this situation is due to my own wrong choices and carelessness. My past self ignored my body’s warning signs and only clung to work. The result is this, making both me and my family suffer. Only regrets fill my mind: ‘Why didn’t I know then?’ ‘Why wasn’t I more careful?’ Even amidst all this frustration, I am merely grateful that my family has not given up on me and remains by my side. But behind that gratitude, there always exists the heavy wall of reality.
