After finishing my studies with Dad, we went out for some exercise. It wasn’t anything grand; it was just walking barefoot on the loess path next to the small library near my house. Both the library and the loess path are quite modest. Dad said that walking barefoot on the dirt path is good for brain health, and he even looked up and confirmed it in books. As Dad kept talking about how good this path was, I suddenly remembered walking barefoot on the school grounds during elementary school in Japan, more than 20 years ago. It’s strange, but that memory came back vividly.
Truth be told, I don’t really like going outside these days. Meeting a lot of people still isn’t comfortable for me. In the past, I would never have gone to a place like this, or if I passed by, I would have just hurried past. But now that I’m injured, I think I’ve come to appreciate the value of such places. I slowly walk the loess path with Dad, enjoying the surrounding scenery and sharing small talks.
I also observe people little by little. Of course, I don’t initiate conversations. Especially if grandmothers seem like they want to talk, I quickly jog past them. I didn’t want to meet anyone. Since my injury, encounters with people have sometimes been overwhelming, and I felt uncomfortable showing my incomplete self.
However, even in this situation, I feel like I’m gradually learning how to communicate with the world through this loess path. New experiences I didn’t know before my injury, and the simple everyday moments I encounter within them, are gaining new meaning for me. Walking this path with Dad’s thoughtful consideration is a great help in my recovery.
